Animal Rescuer To Be Sentenced Tomorrow, Facing Years In Prison

  • Tomorrow, Wayne Hsiung, co-founder of the international animal rights network Direct Action Everywhere, will be sentenced after being found guilty of felony conspiracy and misdemeanour trespass charges on 2/11/23 [1] [2].

  • The convictions relate to the rescue of sick and injured animals from farms in Sonoma County, California. Previously, Hsiung has been found not guilty over charges relating to the rescue of piglets from a farm in Utah [3].

  • In the UK, Animal Rising has carried out 3 open rescues of animals since 2022. Twice, beagle puppies were rescued from MBR Acres in Cambridgeshire, and earlier this year 3 lambs were rescued from the Sandringham Royal Estate [4] [5] [6].

Animal Rising reiterates its support for Direct Action Everywhere and co-founder Wayne Hsiung ahead of sentencing expected tomorrow for his role in rescuing animals from farms in California. Animal Rising supports calls for criminal investigations to be opened into the farms in question and encourages animal lovers across the UK, and beyond, to take action to protect animal lives.

Dan Kidby, Animal Rising Co-Founder said:
“Wayne Hsiung’s bravery and dedication to creating a better world for all life is a lesson to us all; more and more people are stepping up to take action for animals every day - inspired by his courage.
Whether it is Direct Action Everywhere rescuing chickens, ducks, pigs, and more in the USA, or Animal Rising saving beagles and lambs here in the UK, the message is clear: ordinary people are choosing to act in line with their values and protect the most vulnerable animals in our society.
Ahead of Wayne’s sentencing tomorrow, we join calls for Sonoma County law enforcement to seriously investigate the plight of the chickens and ducks in factory farms across their jurisdiction. Rather than prosecuting rescuers who are exposing corporate law-breaking.
Even more so than that, this is a call to action for animal lovers everywhere. Now is the time to step up and be part of creating a kinder world.”

Earlier this year Alicia Santurio and Baywatch star Alexandra Paul were acquitted after rescuing two sick chickens from a slaughterhouse truck in Merced, California [7]. In the UK no convictions have, as yet, been secured for Animal Rising supporters for the rescue of animals. The first such trial is scheduled for 4/11/24 at King’s Lynn Crown Court, for the rescue of three lambs from the Sandringham Royal Estate earlier this year.
